Prezi Hits 18M Users For Its Presentation Platform, Asia An Area For Future Growth [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2013-01-30 at 16.03.42Prezi has come a long way since the days it was a struggling startup in Budapest building a new away for people to create presentations to blow the mind of an audience. Today they have over 100 employees and a San Francisco HQ. It's become a popular alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint and Keynote, and the company is even now advised by Jack Dorsey. At DLD in Munich last week I ran into Peter Arvai, Prezi CEO and Co-founder, where he revealed - on the video here - that after announcing 15 million users last October, they are now on 18 million users. He said they are also course to book 2 million more users per month over the next year. Clearly they are hitting an exponential growth curve.

Has Google Finance's news feed got it in for Apple? - Apple 2.0 ...

Source: Google Finance

Source: Google Finance

FORTUNE -- Hey, Apple's (AAPL) down, let's pile on!

That seems to be the attitude -- if a computer can have an attitude -- of the program that filters headlines on Google's (GOOG) financial news feed.

The list at right (expanded below) was generated by doing a Google Finance ?search for "Apple" at 8 a.m. Monday morning. You have to scroll down 24 headlines to get to a positive one ("Apple Inc. sales of $54 billion and profit of $13 billion both break records") which turns out to be Apple's own press release.

Given that many high-frequency trading algorithms are programmed to react to such headlines -- generated by the likes of Insider Monkey and ValueWalk, but not, curiously, Fortune.com -- these things matter.

Expanded list below.

Real angry birds 'flip the bird' before a fight: Biologists use robots to study attacks of male swamp sparrows

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Male sparrows are capable of fighting to the death. But a new study shows that they often wave their wings wildly first in an attempt to avoid a dangerous brawl.

"For birds, wing waves are like flipping the bird or saying 'put up your dukes. I'm ready to fight,'" said Duke biologist Rindy Anderson.

Male swamp sparrows use wing waves as an aggressive signal to defend their territories and mates from intruding males, Anderson said. The findings also are a first step toward understanding how the birds use a combination of visual displays and songs to communicate with other males.

Anderson and her colleagues published the results online Jan. 28 in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

Scientists had assumed the sparrows' wing-waving behavior was a signal intended for other males, but testing the observations was difficult, Anderson said. So she and her co-author, former Duke engineering undergraduate student David Piech ('12), built a miniature computer and some robotics, which the team then stuffed into the body cavity of a deceased bird. The result was a 'robosparrow' that looked just like a male swamp sparrow, which could flip its wings just like a live male.

Anderson took the wing-waving robosparrow to a swamp sparrow breeding ground in Pennsylvania and placed it in the territories of live males. The robotic bird "sang" swamp sparrow songs using a nearby sound system to let the birds know he was intruding, while Anderson and her colleagues crouched in the swampy grasses and watched the live birds' responses. She also performed the tests with a stuffed sparrow that stayed stationary and one that twisted from side to side. These tests showed that wing waves combined with song are more potent than song on its own, and that wing waves in particular, not just any movement, evoked aggression from live birds.

The live birds responded most aggressively to the invading, wing-waving robotic sparrow, which Anderson said she expected. "What I didn???t expect to see was that the birds would give strikingly similar aggressive wing-wave signals to the three types of invaders," she said. That means that if a bird wing-waved five times to the stationary stuffed bird, he would also wing-wave five times to the wing-waving robot.

Anderson had hypothesized that the defending birds would match the signals of the intruding robots, but her team's results suggest that the males are more individualistic and consistent in the level of aggressiveness that they want to signal, she said.

"That response makes sense, in retrospect, since attacks can be devastating," Anderson said. Because of the risk, the real males may only want to signal a certain level of aggression to see if they could scare off an intruder without the conflict coming to a fight and possible death.

Still, the risk of severe injury or death didn't keep the studly males from swooping in and clawing at the robotic intruder, whether it wing-waved or not. "It's high stakes for these little birds. They only live a couple of years, and most only breed once a year, so owning a territory and having a female is high currency," Anderson said.

She and her team had planned to test how the sparrows use wing waves combined with a characteristic twitter called soft-song to show aggression and fend off competition. But the experiment may be on hold indefinitely because robosparrow's motor seems to be burned out, and its head was ripped off in an attack, a true fight to the death.

5 Ways to Get a Better, Faster, Stronger Website - Website Magazine

By Kristin Tarr, CloudFlare Communications Manager

Website visitors are demanding a lot from online businesses, but none more important than speed, security and fresh content. In an era of increasingly fast access and low tolerance for waiting, customers have little to no patience for a slow website. In addition to website speed, security is a main concern, as we continue to see significant increases in site hackings and identity theft. When it comes to keeping your website fresh, fast and safe, you might find that there are many tips and services out there that can help you. How do you know what works? How do you know what services are best for site speed and security? To help you weed through some of the online options, here are five best practices for keeping your customers engaged and your online business fast and safe.

Go Faster: Hands down, site speed matters. There have been many studies and research done on page load times and how long website visitors are willing to wait for a website to load. The results are all conclusive: when a website is sluggish and can?t keep up with demand, customers won?t wait around. Online businesses need their websites to run smoothly and deliver results quickly 24/7, even when demand is high.?

Services like Pingdom, Page Speed Online and Webpagetest.org help you identify bottlenecks on your site and give you insight on your site?s load time, page size and requests. There are many options out there to help increase the speed of your site. If you?re using WordPress, W3TotalCache and SuperCache are simple, easy to use plugins that help increase site speed. At the end of the day though, make sure you choose a good host. A reliable, stable hosting provider will ensure your website will perform as fast as possible and scale to meet the demands of increased traffic.

Get Healthy & Stay Safe: As an online business, you should secure your site with Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a protocol used to provide security over the Internet and keeps your customers information safe. Be sure to keep your Content Management System platforms up to date and use strong passwords.?

Cyber crime continues to be an issue for websites big and small, with DDoS attacks as the most common attacks against a website for small-to-medium sized businesses. Don?t let an attack shut down your website and cost you customers! There are many security services out there, like CloudFlare, that offer free or inexpensive security options to help protect your website from online attacks and keep your business up and running.

KISS Often (Keep it Simple Stupid): Simple is better. Optimize content on websites to be the most easily accessible for customers. Customers appreciate content that is to the point, easy to consume and loads quickly. Remember, less is often more, and while things like social media buttons are important tools for driving traffic to your site, too many buttons (and ads for that matter) will slow your website down and make it confusing. Try to minimize the amount of widgets you install on each page to create a faster, better experience for your visitors.

Reinvent Your Content: Content is king, the more relevant content is to customers the more likely they?ll keep coming back. SMB?s need to understand their target audience and make content relevant to the customer first, search engine crawlers second.

Keep it secret, keep it safe: Passwords should be unique and never used twice. Strong passwords have upper and lowercase letters, numbers and punctuation marks, and don?t use common names or dictionary words. Many services today now offer two-step authentication to increase the security of their websites. The optional feature will turn users' mobiles into a security token, making their passwords (and websites) even safer than before.

Attackers blow up main oil pipeline in Yemen: officials

SANAA (Reuters) - Unidentified attackers blew up Yemen's main oil pipeline, forcing the country to shut down one of its most lucrative sources of income, government and tribal sources said on Saturday.

Yemen's oil and gas pipelines have been repeatedly sabotaged by insurgents and tribesmen since anti-government protests created a power vacuum in 2011, causing fuel shortages and slashing export earnings for the impoverished country.

Witnesses said the pipeline linking production fields in the central Maarib province to the Red Sea was attacked on Friday night.

"We heard a blast in the Sirwah area followed by flames rising from the pipeline," one tribal witness told Reuters.

Yemen's stability is a priority for the United States and its Gulf Arab allies because of the country's strategic position next to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and shipping lanes, and because is home to one of al Qaeda's most active wings.

A government source said production was halted after a device placed under the pipeline exploded.

"The army is on the trail of the saboteurs and technical teams will immediately start repairing the damage," the source said.

A long closure of the line last year forced the country's largest refinery at Aden to shut, leaving the small producer dependent on fuel donations from Saudi Arabia and imports.

On December 31, Yemen resumed oil pumping at a rate of around 70,000 barrels per day (bpd) after the latest repairs to a pipeline which used to carry around 110,000 bpd of Marib light crude to an export terminal on the Red Sea before a spate of attacks began in 2011.

Blogging my way to health and fitness: How Substance Abuse

By Richman Noah

There are a number of people that suffer these days with dependency whether to drugs or other harmful substances. Nowadays there are a number of substance abuse rehabilitation establishments that are designed to help people get back on track and to live a fresh life once and for all. There are a variety of options available to individuals these days who wish to get a clean life and to live a sober life also. Here are a few basic facts in regards to substance abuse programs and facilities.

Referrals

For people looking to get clean, you can find your own clinic to enroll in or you can speak to your physician. Because addiction is recognized as an illness these facilities are created to help overcome the addiction once and for all. Going to a facility can be done by referral of friends and family or the person on their own walked in to get support. Once you go ahead and take the step to commit to a cleaner life these establishments are going to be a great place to begin.

Intake

This substance abuse rehab program requires an assessment of you and your dependency. Staff will meet with you so they can better learn more about you and what your preferences might be from the program. Not only will they need to learn about what you have abused previously, but they're likely to want to know about current drugs and substances you use. In the event you show signs of both mental and physical health issues they're going to be tackled as well. Both of these situations are normal with dependency. Additionally, staff will look into your mental health and see what types of symptoms you suffer from the addiction.

The assessment may also consider the amount of commitment you are ready to make to change your way of life. They will consider what triggers could impact your recovery such as friends or family along with other social difficulties. This information is likely to be utilized to assist with the power of the care you really need to help meet your needs to recover.

Cleansing Your Body

All drug facilities perform a detoxification of the entire body. This is a step that's made to help detoxify the entire body from toxic substances and prescription drugs. This helps the body eliminate the dependency on Xanax, tranquilizers, and opiod in a safe way. Without care done the right way there might be serious harm done to the body over time. This process can take between 7-10 days.

When it comes to this drug rehab facility you'll be able to choose from outpatient or inpatient facilities. Outpatient facilities allow you to be at home while attending treatment groups. Recovery is difficult, but when the right support is there it can be done.

Ga. Sen. Chambliss won't seek re-election in 2014

ATLANTA (AP) ? When Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss announced Friday that he wouldn't seek a third term in 2014, a race that already was likely to feature a contested Republican primary exploded into a free-for-all.

Several Republicans, including several congressmen, are eyeing the seat. The more crowded the field, the more likely the GOP race will pit mainstream conservatives against the hardliners who had grown disenchanted with Chambliss for working with Democrats to find common ground on budget and tax issues.

Democrats, meanwhile, hope for exactly that kind of Republican fracas. They view the 69-year-old Chambliss' decision as an opportunity to reverse the GOP's total domination in a state that once elected moderate Democratic governors such as Jimmy Carter.

"Regardless of what happens, it's going to be a 10-person race," said 11-term U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston of Augusta, who is now considering a bid. "I think you'll probably have a self-funder in there, and you can have a mad scramble."

Among Kingston's colleagues, other possible candidates include U.S. Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Tom Price. Former Gov. Sonny Perdue and former Secretary of State Karen Handel are also viewed as potential contenders.

"There's a lot of math going on today," said Bert Brantley, a Republican strategist and former Perdue aide. "It's a lot of phone calls with donors and strategists as people ask themselves, 'Can I make this work financially? Electorally?'"

Democrats declared Georgia as a prime target. U.S. Rep. John Barrow and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed are the most obvious choices for a state party with an otherwise thin bench.

"There are already several reports of the potential for a divisive primary that will push Republicans to the extreme right," said Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "Regardless, there's no question that the demographics of the state have changed, and Democrats are gaining strength. This will be a top priority."

Democrats' optimism runs in the face of recent trends. President Barack Obama ran stronger here than in other Deep South states, but still lost by 8 percentage points in 2012. But Republicans over the last decade have amassed near super-majorities in the legislature and now control every statewide elective office and most of the Peach State's congressional seats.

Chambliss was first elected to Congress in the 1994 Republican wave. He moved up to the U.S. Senate after defeating Democratic incumbent Max Cleland, a triple amputee from his Vietnam war service, in 2002. Chambliss was widely criticized for slashing campaign ads that featured Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein and that criticized Cleland as weak on defense and homeland security issues.

Chambliss revealed his decision not to seek re-election in a written statement Friday morning.

The senator drew the ire of hard-line conservatives over his participation in the "Gang of Six," a group of three Democrats and three Republicans that tried but failed to fashion a grand compromise on fiscal issues. One of those senators, Democrat Mark Warner of Virginia, praised Chambliss as a statesman on Friday.

Conservative angst resurfaced when Chambliss voted for the tax-and-debt compromise that Obama fashioned with congressional leaders over the New Year's holidays to avoid the fiscal cliff. The measure held taxes steady for the middle class but allowed them to rise at incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples.

Broun and Price had already floated the possibility of challenging Chambliss in a GOP primary.

"I have no doubt that had I decided to be a candidate, I would have won re-election," Chambliss said in his statement. "Instead, this is about frustration, both at a lack of leadership from the White House and at the dearth of meaningful action from Congress, especially on issues that are the foundation of our nation's economic health."

National tea party leader and Georgia resident Amy Kremer celebrated Chambliss's departure. "Many people in the tea party movement here in Georgia felt Chambliss was tired and unwilling to fight the difficult battles to control government spending in Washington without increasing our nation's tax burden," she said.

Several Republicans acknowledged the potential of a divisive fight pitting tea party-aligned candidates ? someone like Broun or Gingrey ? against more establishment conservatives, like Kingston. Several Republicans said Price could appeal to both camps.

A Price spokeswoman said her boss "is speaking with a number of folks ... and listening to their observations and advice." Gingrey focused his remarks Friday on Chambliss. Broun's office did not respond to a request for comment.

A Handel spokesman declined comment. With the backing of Sarah Palin, Handel proved a formidable statewide candidate in her 2010 bid for governor, narrowly losing a Republican primary runoff to eventual winner Nathan Deal, a former congressman. A Deal spokesman said he plans to seek re-election in 2014.

Brantley, the Perdue confidant, said he had not talked with his former boss Friday about the race.

Republicans said Friday that the potential candidates will spend the next few weeks running a quiet campaign among donors and power players before making a decision.

Georgia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Berlon, meanwhile, said Democrats "want to get the right candidate and line up behind him or her in the next few weeks." Neither Barrow nor Reed tipped their hands.

In 2012, Barrow withstood a Republican redistricting plan to win another term as the last white Democrat representing a Deep South state in the U.S. House. Should he run for the Senate, he'd almost certainly hand the 12th District seat to the GOP.

Barrow benefited last fall from a nasty GOP primary that yielded a conservative candidate with little money, the kind of scenario Democrats would love to see repeated in a Senate race.

Berlon called Atlanta's Reed "a rising star who has the talent to play at the national level." Reed, a prominent campaign surrogate for the White House last fall, appears poised to coast to victory in his mayoral re-election bid this year.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, who will become Georgia's senior senator when Chambliss retires, deferred any talk of 2014. "Saxby has been my friend for 50 years, since we started at the University of Georgia," he said. "I'm going to miss my friend. ... I won't get into predicting elections. I've learned that Georgia voters usually make the right decision, so I'll leave it to them."

International adoptions by U.S. parents fall again in 2012

(Reuters) - The number of children adopted internationally by American parents fell 7 percent last year, continuing a multi-year decline brought on in part by tightened adoption rules, a U.S. State Department report showed on Thursday.

Some 8,668 children were adopted into U.S. families from abroad in the 2012 fiscal year, down from 9,320 the previous year, with more children coming from China than from any other country, the report said.

"This is a continuation of a trend," said Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute and the author of "Adoption Nation."

"There's no lack of, if you will, demand in this country," he told Reuters. "People would like to adopt more children; the issue is whether those children are available. And they're becoming less and less available, and that's what the numbers show."

The number of foreign children adopted by U.S. parents peaked in 2004 at 22,884, according to U.S. government figures.

China, which sent 2,697 children to the United States last year, has for years sent more children to American parents than has any other country, in large part due to its one-child policy. Ethiopia was the second most popular country for U.S. adoptions, with 1,568 adoptions last year.

Russia ranked third with 748 children sent to the United States. The report, covering the fiscal year ending on September 30, concluded before Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law last month banning Americans from adopting Russian children.

The ban is part of a package of legislation that responds to a U.S. law known as the Magnitsky Act, which excludes Russians from the United States who are suspected of involvement in the death in custody of anti-graft lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in 2009 or of other human rights violations.

Russia's Supreme Court has ruled that, in cases where adoptions had been approved by courts before the new year, the children should be handed over to their new parents.

TOUGHENED REGULATIONS

Part of the decline in adoption numbers can be attributed to the signing of the Hague Convention on intercountry adoption, Pertman said.

The convention entered into force for the United States in 2008 and improved regulation of international adoptions to try to cut down on corruption. But it also slowed down adoptions and led to a shutdown in some countries.

The other factor contributing to the decline is that some countries are changing the way they view and handle their intercountry adoptions.

One of those countries is China, which has begun to re-examine whether it can afford to lose the large number of baby girls it allows to leave the country to international adoptive parents, Pertman said.

Most adoptions from China involve girls, because many parents there prefer to have their one child be a boy for social and economic reasons. China has created hurdles for international adoptive parents as it has sought to build up its own domestic adoption program.

As a result of the geopolitical changes making it more difficult for Americans to adopt from abroad, they are having to wait longer to bring a child to the United States, Pertman said. Average wait times are now between two and five years, depending on the country, he said.

"The people who suffer most as a consequence of this are the children who remain in orphanages, who will not have a family in their own country or in the United States," Pertman said.

The largest number of adoptions in the United States continues to come from within the country's foster care system, which accounts for over 50,000 adoptions a year, Pertman said.

Secrets of a mentor to future CEOs ? Business Management Daily ...

In his 15 years as CEO of ICICI Bank, K.V. Kamath says he spent 30% of his time mentoring employees. The 65-year-old native of India views mentoring as a natural part of communicating with high-potential subordinates.

When Kamath became the bank?s CEO in 1996, he inherited a pool of young managers who lacked the seasoning to step into senior roles.

?I had to watch for talent and once I spotted it, provide them opportunities to grow,? Kamath says. ?Once they had reached a senior level, I then needed to rotate them through different areas so their talents were rounded.?

For Kamath, mentoring involves guiding people to set more ambitious goals. He likes to give mentees hard-to-reach targets along with the confidence to attain them.

One of his prot?g?s, Shikha Sharma, recalls that Kamath wanted her to help grow an ICICI business unit to become the dominant market leader. Sharma admits she never would have dreamed up such an audacious goal on her own?much less achieve it. She?s now CEO of Axis Bank in India. Mentoring typically involves doling out lots of advice. But Kamath doesn?t give much feedback; instead, he signals satisfaction by rotating the individual through a series of increasingly high-profile assignments.

Kamath seeks to limit his working relationship with mentees. He holds short, business-oriented meetings with them. He prefers to remain distant rather than forge personal bonds.

?I don?t believe a mentor and mentee should have a confiding relationship,? he explains. ?If you concern yourself with their personal life, the relationship can get unmanageable.?

Finally, Kamath likes to see mentees show initiative. When one of them made bold procedural changes in one of ICICI?s regional business units, Kamath asked, ?Who gave you permission to make such big moves?? When the mentee replied, ?No one. I decided on my own,? Kamath said, ?That?s exactly what I wanted to hear.?

The Giant Squid Stalker

Deep-sea biologist Edith Widder was working on a ship positioned off Japan?s Ogasawara Islands when Wen-Sung Chung asked her to step into the lab to see something. Cameras followed her as she got up. This was not unusual, since the Japan Broadcasting Commission (NHK) and the Discovery Channel were funding the expedition, which was being conducted from a research yacht named Alucia leased from a billionaire hedge fund owner. Chung was nonchalant, so it didn?t occur to Widder that she was about to see the culmination of a quest that has driven ocean explorers for more than a century. She thought maybe it was going to be video of a cool shark.

The purpose of the expedition was to capture footage of the enigmatic giant squid in its natural habitat. The animal can grow to 35 feet or longer, and its eye is as big as your head. But it lives about 1,000 feet below the surface and deeper, and it had only been glimpsed a few times at the surface and photographed alive once.

Widder is a world expert on bioluminescence, the light that countless marine animals use to communicate, especially in the dark world of the deep sea. For years she?s been studying how the deep?s bizarre inhabitants use the light. Some animals use it to lure a mate, others a meal. And she suspects that certain jellyfish pulse with bioluminescence when they are getting attacked. It?s a last-ditch attempt that works sort of like a burglar alarm to bring in something even bigger to attack the attacker.

Widder has spent months of her life underwater, at times piloting submersibles. For years, she has argued that scientists were getting at best a tilted view of the wonders of the deep sea. By going down with robotic vehicles or in submersibles with lights blazing, she and others have reasoned, they were scaring lots of good stuff away. Deep-sea animals barely see any light, so a typical submersible dive is the equivalent of coming into a darkened theater and shining a spotlight at the audience. Everything bolts.

Years ago, on a shoestring budget, she and her team built a deployable system that included a low-light camera and dim red lights, which most deep dwellers can?t detect. (Their eyes are tuned to blue wavelengths, which travel farther through water.)

Then she added bait. The system, called Eye-in-the-Sea, is fitted with a device that mimics the ring of blue lights fired in a marquee pattern by certain jellyfish?the ones she thinks do the burglar alarm trick. She deployed the system for the first time in the Gulf of Mexico. Just 86 seconds later, a large squid darted into view; it was a species new to science.

Widder brought a more advanced version of that system, dubbed Medusa, aboard the Alucia. She hoped the secret weapon would attract a giant squid. They hung it about 2,300 feet down from a surface buoy and left it running for hours.

Watch the Pulsing Deep-Sea Lights of Bioluminescence

The giant squid has been the stuff of legend for about as long as people have sailed across oceans. Aristotle and Pliny the Elder described what may have been giant squid, which occasionally wash ashore or end up in fishermen?s nets, and the species is thought to be the origin of the Norwegian kraken myth.

Countless groups in past decades have tried to manufacture giant squid encounters, investing millions, getting all the best advice from the experts, only to come back as failed crusaders. One of the other scientists aboard the Alucia, Tsunemi Kubodera of Japan?s National Museum of Nature and Science, has been hunting giant squid in these waters for years. He managed to capture some still images of one giant squid and video of another after it was caught and brought to the surface. But none of that could compare to video of the animal alive in the deep, a view that would finally allow scientists to begin to understand the mysterious animal.

The expedition has not released expense figures, but it must have cost millions. When Chung, a graduate student at the University of Queensland, brought Widder into the lab and started fast-forwarding through the video, the scientists were already a week into a six-week expedition with nothing significant to show. Producer-types were growing tense.

Ouya announces new controller with improved design based on feedback

Android Central

Taking a whole boatload of feedback into consideration, the Ouya team has made several notable improvements to its controller. Developers that have had their hands on the consoles for a few weeks have started to give their recommendations back as to how the controller could be improved, and the team is taking it all to heart.

First, the D-pad on the controller has switched from a "disc" to more traditional "cross" layout, which should help prevent accidental movements. The thumbstick caps have been redesigned to give more grip, and the touchpad area has better sensitivity now. The triggers have been improved as well, and are now more flush with the body of the controller. And last but not least, the battery compartment has been redesigned for a tighter fit, and some materials will be changed out for higher quality ones by the time the final units ship.

Those are some notable improvements, changing basically all of the input surfaces on the controller. Ouya seems committed to delivering a high quality product to consumers, so let's hope this all comes through in the end.

CyberLink PowerDirector 11

Seldom do I come across a product that so far surpasses all the competition in its field by every measure. And it's hardly as if there isn't much competition in the consumer video editing software game, with entries from software strongholds the likes of Adobe, Corel, Sony, Nero, and more. Not only is CyberLink PowerDirector 11 the fastest video editing software to use, but it also can boast the deepest arsenal of tools and yet remain among the easiest to use, with a clear, intuitive interface.

Again with this latest version, PowerDirector achieves a first among consumer video editors?support for 4K video content, which, judging from this year's CES trade show, is the future of digital video. Previously, PowerDirector had been a pioneer in 3D video editing. Version 11 also brings Adobe-like "content aware" features, which analyze your video footage for things like shakiness, lighting, and faces. They've also revamped the program interface for even better usability. Let's dig in and take a look at why this is the software to get if you're an amateur who's enthusiastic about creating digital movies.

Installation
Installing CyberLink PowerDirector is available at four levels, starting with Deluxe ($69.99 list), moving through Ultra ($99.99), Ultimate ($129.99), and ending with the $249.99 Ultimate Suite, which includes ColorDirector for advanced color grading, and AudioDirector for professional audio editing. The software runs on Windows 8, 7, Vista, or XP SP3; there's no Mac version. I tested the Ultra Edition, which includes the speedup of hardware acceleration and can handle 4K Ultra HD video?pretty impressive for a consumer package! After a 430MB download, the setup process took less than 5 minutes to install on my 3.4GHz quad core test PC with 4GB of DDR3 RAM.

Getting Started
When you fire up PowerDirector for the first time, you'll see its Welcome window, which features three big buttons?Full Feature Editor, Easy Editor, and Slideshow. Above this, a smaller option control lets you set your video project for 16:9 HD or 4:3 standard-def aspect ratio. You can disable this prequel to the actual editor and launch the full editor if you prefer; a checkbox at the bottom lets you bypass it. The software can import pretty much every video file format you throw at it, and version 11 adds support for MKV, a flexible open source format popular with the BitTorrent crowd, and AVCHD 2.0, which adds 1080p and 3D video capabilities for Sony and Panasonic camcorders.?

Easy Editing
The Easy Editor uses a wizard interface to take you through the workflow of importing, theming, adjusting, previewing, and finally outputting a canned digital movie project. My default setup only had two themes included, Ink Splatter and Reflection, but I could choose from hundreds more to download from DirectorZone, CyberLink's online community of media enthusiasts. After choosing a style, you can add background music from your computer, and change the video length to match. The resulting movie isn't exactly "instant": The wizard then analyzed the content and created the movie, a process that took 6 minutes for my 3:26 movie.

Other apps include more in the way of canned music to add to their instant projects. A nice capability is a slider that lets you adjust the balance between the video and background sound. After this, you get a preview, with transitions and effects added. The results were a bit hokey for me, but some will find them fun. After you've previewed the Magic Movie, the final step is to produce it by outputting to a file or burning to disc. Alternatively, you can open it in the advanced editor for fine-tuning.

A couple more Magic tools may be of interest: Magic Fix and Magic Cut. The first stabilizes and enhances audio and image quality, while the latter finds the most interesting parts of a clip and cuts out the rest. This last lets you match a clip to a music track's length, and even lets you set criteria like favoring sections with zooming and panning or with people speaking or moving objects. It worked as advertised in my testing, and offers a handy way to ditch boring stretches in your video clips.

The Real Video Editing Interface
The actual editor interface, gotten to by choosing "Full Feature Editor" from the Welcome screen, uses three panels, with the top divided in half between the source (called the "library") and effects panel, a preview window on the right, and the bottom taking up the timeline or storyboard. You can resize each panel relative to the other, and you can now undock the preview window into a separate window as you can with Corel VideoStudio.

The timeline is easy to customize and navigate, with a button for adding tracks (you're allowed up to 100!). By default, you get two pairs of video and audio tracks, and effects track, and title voice, and music tracks. You can lock, disable/enable view, or rename tracks from the left track info area, and you can even use drag and drop to move them up and down on the timeline. Zooming the timeline in and out is also a snap, either with Ctrl-Mouse wheel ora slider control.? The storyboard view in PowerDirector is one of the program's few weak points: It's just thumbnails, with no ability to add transitions or other effects. It does let you insert clips, but if you try to add a transition, the view will be switched to timeline. I'd almost recommend CyberLink to ditch the storyboard until it's more useful. Some other video editors, such as Sony Vegas Movie Studio, dispense with it.

Russia urges North Korea to abide by nuclear, missile rules

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia urged North Korea on Wednesday to adhere to restrictions on its nuclear and missile programs, after the U.N. Security Council expanded existing sanctions against Pyongyang over a rocket launch last month.

"We hope our North Korean neighbors will heed the voice of the international community and return to the path of cooperation ... but for this it is necessary to stay within the bounds of the demands made in U.N. Security Council resolutions," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

West Bank account: Prankster inside E1 settlement sales secrets ? RT

Israelis willing to risk buying property in disputed area in the West Bank are being offered ?amazing? real estate deals. More property deals are likely to come if Benjamin Netanyahu claims victory in the elections in Israel.

"); $(".tail_text").show(500); return false; }

?Netanyahu is seeking his third term in the office and has stressed that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are to be expanded by thousands of housing units.

UK-based Jewish filmmaker Nimrod Kamer went to the disputed E1 sector in the West Bank and found out that not only settlements are being expanded, but the real estate deals in the area are beneficial to Jewish people.

In his film, made exclusively for RT, Kamer pretends to be a real estate developer, who together with a rich UK investor goes to the E1 area to acquire land and property. The filmmaker explores the area and negotiates with locals to get him a better deal.

He also reveals the public mood. At one point in the film he talks with a Jewish woman who wants to sell an apartment, who asserts that the land is Jewish, while Palestinians are just renting it.

The newly built real estate in E1 largely belongs to one company that is ready to guarantee good deals for Israelis who want to settle in East Jerusalem, Kamer told RT, adding that there are also subsidies from the State of Israel.

According to Kamer the properties are presented as a place for Jews and are competitively priced. Many Israelis move to the West Bank to simply save on real estate, rather than for political or religious reasons, he said.

Meanwhile, the E1 area still remains highly disputed. In early January some 200 Palestinians and foreign activists set up a tent camp in E1 demanding to preserve the area for an independent Palestinian state.

Two days later the camp was evicted by Israeli forces. The eviction was ordered by Prime Minister Netanyahu after the authorities convinced Israel?s High Court the action was necessary.

By vowing to build housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has largely capitalized on security in his campaign, is undermining national safety, Tal Harris, executive director of the One Voice Movement, told RT.

There is a contradiction between ?a vague promise, that was made almost four years ago for a two-state solution, allegedly adopted by PM Netanyahu and an increasing build-up of settlements, which makes the two-state solution increasingly harder,? he explained.

Shortly after Palestine secured non-member observer status at the UN Netanyahu promised to build 4,000 more housing units in the disputed territories, the construction of some 2,600 has already been approved.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. New research into the treatment and prognosis of gastrointestinal cancers was released today in advance of the tenth annual Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium being held January 24-26, 2013, at The Moscone West Building in San Francisco, CA.

Five important studies were highlighted today in a live presscast:

  • Postoperative Treatment with S-1 Chemotherapy Reduces Relapses and Extends Survival in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer: Early results from a Phase III clinical trial conducted in Japan show patients who received the chemotherapy drug S-1 after surgery for Stage I-III pancreatic adenocarcinoma had a 44 percent lower risk of dying compared with patients treated with gemcitabine. While S-1 is not yet approved in the United States, it is available in several Asian and European countries.
  • New Molecular Classification System for Colorectal Cancer May Help Guide Treatment Choice for Individual Patients: Researchers identified three distinct colorectal cancer subtypes based on gene expression patterns in patients' tumors. The findings may lead to new molecular tests for determining if a patient needs adjuvant treatment and which treatment might be most beneficial.
  • Surgery Following Imatinib Therapy Substantially Improves Survival for Certain Patients with Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs): A new retrospective study validated the benefit of performing surgery to remove residual tumor lesions after imatinib therapy. Patients who received surgery after imatinib had a 5.5 fold lower risk of dying and a nearly 4-year longer time to disease worsening compared with those who received imatinib alone.
  • Profiling Gene Expression in Circulating Tumor Cells Shows Promise as a New Prognostic Strategy for Patients with Pancreatic Cancer: A study profiling gene expression in cells shed from pancreatic tumors into the bloodstream detected genomic changes associated with response and resistance to different treatments. This new profiling strategy may help predict whether or not a patient would respond to a particular chemotherapy regimen.
  • Second-Line Docetaxel Chemotherapy Improves Survival in Patients with Treatment-Resistant Esophageal or Gastric Cancers: A Phase III study showed that patients with esophageal or stomach cancers whose disease worsened despite first-line chemotherapy live on average 50 percent longer if they received second-line docetaxel than if they receive active symptom control (radiotherapy, steroids, and/or supportive medications). While docetaxel is already being used in this setting, the new study provides definitive evidence of survival benefit with second-line docetaxel.

"Research continues to deliver advances that will improve the lives of patients with gastrointestinal cancers, and we are learning to understand how to use molecular characteristics of tumors to choose and customize therapy for individual patients," said Neal J. Meropol, MD, who moderated the presscast. "At this conference, we will see the results of new studies showing life-extending treatments for some of our deadliest and hardest to treat cancers and new insights on tumor classification and prognosis."

Gastrointestinal cancers include those of the colon/rectum, stomach, pancreas, esophagus, small intestine, anus and other digestive organs. In 2012, it was estimated that nearly 285,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with these cancers and more than 142,000 will died from them.
