Julius Erving, a.k.a. Dr. J denies memorabilia auction tied to lawsuit

Julius Erving: Known on the hardwood as Dr. J, Erving told The Associated Press on Wednesday he's never been a "hoarder or collector," and plans to donate a portion of the auction proceeds to the Salvation Army.

Julius Erving has denied an upcoming auction of his personal basketball memorabilia collection is tied to a lawsuit filed against him by a Georgia bank.

Known on the hardwood as Dr. J, Erving told The Associated Press on Wednesday he's never been a "hoarder or collector," and plans to donate a portion of the auction proceeds to the Salvation Army. Erving's auction collection includes his 1983 NBA championship ring with the Philadelphia 76ers, a pair of ABA championship rings with the New York Nets, and MVP trophies from each league.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Erving owes more than $200,000 on a loan with Georgia Primary Bank, according to a lawsuit filed in Fulton Superior Court.

The lawsuit was reported only hours after SCP Auctions announced that bidding would be open to registered bidders on Friday for many of Erving's championship rings, important awards and game-used items. The timing of Tuesday's announcements led to speculation that Erving, voted one of the NBA's 50 greatest players, was hocking goods because the Hall of Famer needed cash.

Not true, he said.

"That irony actually gave me a sleepless night last night," he said. "I had to laugh at it and cringe at it that these stories would run concurrent with one another."

The 61-year-old Erving said the auction was part of a long-planned celebration of his career. He said most of his cherished possessions were in storage and that he rarely looked at his collection. He said he occasionally wore his 1983 ring and never his ABA rings. Erving said he will keep his Hall of Fame ring. His induction into the Hall of Fame came in 1993.

"My family is 100 percent behind it," he said. "We decided to do it a long time ago. To claim it's a firesale or to clear up some debt, I don't think so. You don't do an auction overnight. This has been long planned. We had 4,000 catalogs that have been mailed already to people who buy this kind of stuff."

Be prepared to spend. Dr. J's goods don't come cheap. Items available at www.scpauctions.com include:

? 1969-70 game-worn UMass jersey. Minimum bid: $15,000.

? 1974 New Jersey Nets ABA championship ring. Minimum bid: $20,000

? 1975-76 ABA MVP trophy. Minimum bid: $10,000.

? 1983 Philadelphia 76ers NBA championship ring. Minimum bid: $25,000.

Yes, even a pair of game-worn Converse sneakers customized for the cult classic, "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh," are available for a minimum bid of $500.

Just don't expect to soar through the air like Dr. J.

His above-the-rim game, first unveiled in the renegade American Basketball Association, was a harbinger of the style that was soon to dominate. Erving won pro basketball's first slam-dunk competition, and his soaring reverse layup from the baseline during the 1980 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers was a highlight for the ages.

"With me being involved in the process and the one that's putting it out, it's actually a better situation economically then if my children or grandchildren were to do it," Erving said. "We decided now's the time."

Still, Erving has been hit with financial issues since he moved to Atlanta, the newspaper reported. The AJC reported in April 2010 that a golf club Erving purchased was in foreclosure. The bank filed a lawsuit Oct. 18 against Erving and his corporation, The Erving Group Inc. of Atlanta. Erving's company was given a $1 million line of credit in April 2009, which was due the following April, according to the lawsuit obtained by the AJC.

In the lawsuit, the bank stated an outstanding balance of $205,277.84 has not been paid, despite a demand letter for payment sent Sept. 29.

Erving said he visited the bank on Wednesday in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Erving said he still works and lives off his present-day income, not any savings. He's involved in a cell phone business, a medical records company and a blood cord company.

His marquee job is just being Dr. J.

"Every day there's something associated with Dr. J that I have to discuss with one or more of my personal associates or family members," he said.

Erving is perhaps the greatest Sixer and the franchise hasn't won a championship since '83. His sightings in the city and at Sixers functions have been sparse and there was a disconnect between him and the team.

The Sixers were recently sold to new owners that promised to strengthen the link to their past. Majority owner Joshua Harris and Erving served together on the board of directors at Converse, and Dr. J was recently back in the Philadelphia area for a private reunion of the 1983 team.

"They are reaching out and they are interested in their heritage and that's good to see," Erving said.

Bidding will be open to registered bidders on Oct. 28 and conclude Nov. 19. For more information on how to participate, visit www.scpauctions.com..

Penn State: College football record one win away for Joe Paterno

Penn State?s head coach Joe Paterno has long been a Nittany Lion in winner?s mode. With a victory over Illinois Saturday, Paterno will have the most wins in the major-college ranks.

Penn State?s Joe Paterno is already three decades beyond being age-eligible for AARP membership. The university?s head football coach not only can claim seniority in his profession, he?s about to reach an Everest peak with more wins than any other major-college coach in history.

His next coaching victory, which could come Saturday against Illinois, will be his 409th. That would give him one more than the record he currently shares with the late Eddie Robinson, who rang up 408 career wins at Grambling State in Grambling, La.

Altogether Paterno has coached for 62 years at Penn State, first as an assistant to Rip Engle, and for the last 46 years as the head man. That tenure at the helm makes him the longest continuously serving coach at the same Division I school, a mark previously held by Amos Alonzo Stagg, who spent 44 years at the University of Chicago.

Penn State quiz: Do you know your Joe Paterno trivia?

During six decades on the Penn State sideline, Paterno has coached in more than half of all the game?s in the school?s long football history, which began in 1887.

Consider this: When Paterno arrived in University Park, Pa., fresh out of college in 1950, Harry Truman was president and Winston Churchill was still Britain?s prime minister. The Korean conflict was raging.

On the gridiron, things were far different than they are today. Army was second-ranked and Princeton No. 6. Penn State was an independent, decades away from joining the Big Ten Conference. H-shaped goalposts were made of wood, and players had single-bar face masks, if any at all.

Despite all that Paterno has done plying his trade in Pennsylvania?s ?Happy Valley,? it wasn?t long ago that even the faithful began to think the Brooklyn native may have stayed too long at the dance. Yes, he had led the Nittany Lions to five undefeated seasons, two national championships (in 1982 and 1986), and more bowl wins than any coach in history (35) ? this while making generous financial gifts to the university. But the ?Grand Experiment? ? Paterno?s vision for successfully marrying winning football with academic integrity ? appeared to be faltering.

PFT: Week 8 picks: Eagles-Cowboys a tough call

Dallas Cowboys v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

Last week, Rosenthal and I disagreed on three games.? He was right on two of them, and I now trail by seven for the season.

To make matters worse, I was a pathetic 7-6.? He was 8-5.

To make matters even worse, there?s a chance it gets worse this weekend, with another 13 games.? At least he can only increase his lead to nine games, since we disagree on only two of them:? Bengals-Seahawks and Cowboys-Eagles.

For the year, he?s 71-32 and I?m 64-39.

Read on to see who we?ve picked and specifically how we disagree.? Given the choice of photo for this item, it?s safe to say I?ll be singing Fly, Eagles! Fly! on Sunday night.

Cardinals at Ravens

Florio?s take:? The Ravens play well at home.? The Ravens don?t play well against bad teams.? The Ravens are playing at home.? The Ravens are playing a bad team.? But the Cardinals are really bad, and the Ravens have gotten a kick in the pants after losing to the Jaguars.

Florio?s pick:? Ravens 31, Cardinals 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Steelers struggled in the second half against the Jaguars two weeks ago, and took out their aggression on the Cardinals in Arizona. The Ravens lost to the Jaguars Monday night, and can take it out on the Cardinals in Baltimore. Passing game problems magically disappear when teams play Arizona.

Rosenthal?s pick: Ravens 31, Cardinals 13.

Vikings at Panthers

Florio?s take:? The Panthers have made it through a rough stretch of their schedule, and they have a chance to enter the bye on a two-game winning streak.? The Vikings have never won in Charlotte, and it?s unlikely that they?ll change that on Sunday.

Florio?s pick:? Panthers 28, Vikings 20.

Rosenthal?s take: It?s not really fair to Andy Dalton, Christian Ponder, and Blaine Gabbert to be rookies the same year as Cam Newton. The Panthers quarterback is starting to mix better decisions with his weekly ?wow? plays. Newton just doesn?t play like a rookie. He really doesn?t play like anyone that came before him.

Rosenthal?s pick: Panthers 33, Vikings 23.

Jaguars at Texans

Florio?s take:? The best of a bad crop of early games, this one got much more interesting after the Jaguars stunned the Ravens on Monday night.? Tied 9-9 all-time, the Texans can put a stranglehold on the AFC South with a win, and the Jaguars can make it interesting with an upset.? The edge goes to the home team.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 27, Jaguars 20.

Rosenthal?s take: If defense really wins championships, the Jaguars could be contenders. But Jacksonville needs something more from Blaine Gabbert, and teams need more in the gameplan than not turning the ball over. The Texans have a pretty decent defense, not to mention a guy named Arian Foster and a great run-blocking line.

Rosenthal?s pick: Texans 23, Jaguars 13.

Dolphins at Giants

Florio?s take:? The Dolphins return to MetLife Stadium only 13 days after being steamrolled by the Jets.? It wouldn?t be a shock if the Giants stub their toe, given their performance against the Seahawks.? But, c?mon, they?re playing the Dolphins.? The Matt Moore/J.P. Losman-led Dolphins.? A Miami win would be an even bigger upset than Super Bowl XLII.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 24, Dolphins 7.

Rosenthal?s take: It sounds weird, but this is a ?must? win for the Giants. They can?t afford another bad home loss with the following schedule coming up: at Patriots, at 49ers, Eagles, at Saints, Packers, and at Cowboys.? Luckily, the Giants face a squad this week that seemingly approaches every game as a ?must? lose.

Rosenthal?s pick: Giants 28, Dolphins 10.

Saints at Rams

Florio?s take:? This week, Sean Payton will be able to eat a hot dog, some nachos, a soft pretzel, and a box of popcorn.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 42, Rams 14.

Rosenthal?s take: The Rams defense is most disappointing group in the league.? The pass rush vanished.? They are a mess at cornerback and special teamers starting at linebacker.? Free-agent pickup Quintin Mikell has struggled.? Only the Colts have given up more points than St. Louis, and that?s because of what the Saints just did to Indy.? The Rams will be last in points allowed after this one.

Rosenthal?s pick: Saints 41, Rams 20.

Colts at Titans

Florio?s take:? Four days ago, the Colts lost by 55 at New Orleans.? Two years ago, the Titans endured a 59-point blowout against the Patriots.? The Titans won their next game.? That?s where the similarities end.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 30, Colts 14.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Titans were outscored 79-14 the last two games.? The Colts were outscored 62-7 last week.? Something has to give here, so I?ll guess it?s the winless team staying winless.

Rosenthal?s pick: Titans 26, Colts 17.

Redskins at Bills

Florio?s take:? Another week, another Super Bowl rematch.? The last three (Bills-Giants, Steelers-Cardinals, Colts-Saints) resulted in the same outcome.? The trend will now be reversed, thanks to a rested Bills squad and a Redskins team that has been sliding back toward reality.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 34, Redskins 24.

Rosenthal?s take: The Bills defense may have finally found a passing attack they can stop.? Or perhaps John Beck found a defense he can make noise against.? Either way, the Bills are better equipped to win a shootout. Plus Ryan Fitzpatrick?s beard just belongs in Canada. (This is the hard-hitting analysis you come to PFT for.)

Rosenthal?s pick: Bills 31, Redskins 24.

Lions at Broncos

Florio?s take:? When a Christian is thrown to the Lions, sometimes the Christian wins.? But not yet.?? Though it?s tempting to predict an upset, the Lions can?t afford to run their losing streak to three, and the Broncos simply don?t have the horses to beat a team much better than the Dolphins.

Florio?s pick:? Lions 24, Broncos 14.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Lions offense hasn?t consistently sustained drives for weeks. The Broncos passing attack had two yards halfway through the fourth quarter last week before Tim Tebow recovered an onside kick and sacked Matt Moore in overtime, before Tebow kicked a 52-yard field goal.? In short:? Expect a defensive game, with Matthew Stafford providing the drama this time.

Rosenthal?s pick: Lions 17, Broncos 13.

Patriots at Steelers

Florio?s take:? Tom Brady, not Art Rooney, owns the Pittsburgh Steelers.? Yes, it?s that simple.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 34, Steelers 20.

Rosenthal?s take: Is the Steelers defense dominant again or have they just fattened their stats on the Seahawks, Colts, Jaguars, and Cardinals? I?m not sure the answer makes a difference. Tom Brady has a habit of shredding the Steelers even when Pittsburgh?s defense is truly elite.

Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 30, Steelers 24.

Bengals at Seahawks

Florio?s take:? It?s easy to write off the Seahawks in this one based on their performance (or whatever that thing should be called) in Cleveland.? But they?re a different team at home, and the Bengals? 4-2 start is a little deceiving.? So whether it?s Tarvaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst, the Seahawks and their 12th Man will continue their up-and-down season with a showing that will be enough to generate a win.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 20, Bengals 17.

Rosenthal?s take: If you liked Browns-Seahawks last week, you?re going to love this one.? Cedric Benson won?t be available.? Tarvaris Jackson might be, but Charlie Whitehurst?s effort last week guarantees the Seahawks crowd won?t be chanting for the backup anymore.? I?m picking the Bengals because I want to live in a world that Andy Dalton?s crew is in first place to start November.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bengals 10, Seahawks 7.

Browns at 49ers

Florio?s take:? Now that the 49ers have gotten through a difficult stretch to start the season with a 5-1 record and are emerging from a bye, it would be fitting to see them come up flat against the Browns, especially since it?s a homecoming game of sorts for team president Mike Holmgren.? Unlike the team led by Jim Harbaugh?s brother, John, the 49ers won?t play down to the level of the Browns, who while improving have a long way to go before they can be regarded as truly improved.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 27, Browns 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Browns are the worst 3-3 team possible, with Colt McCoy regressing by the week. They play an ugly brand of football, but that?s the kind of game the 49ers like.? San Francisco runs better than the Browns, and they defend better too.? The 49ers are a legit 5-1 team.? Make it 6-1.

Rosenthal?s pick: 49ers 22, Browns 13.

Cowboys at Eagles

Florio?s take:? The rested Eagles can?t completely shake controversy, thanks to the comments of cornerback Asante Samuel.? But the Eagles surely sense the opportunity to seize the division, and they can?t do it without beating the Cowboys.? Though Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will have cooked up a good plan for containing Mike Vick, Andy Reid has had two weeks to come up with a way for generating offense, presumably with heavy doses of LeSean McCoy.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 30, Cowboys 24.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Eagles are a team of extremes.? They lead the league in rushing.? They lead the league in interceptions and turnovers.? They outgain their opponents by 100 yards-per-week, and find a way to lose.? Dallas knows how to blow fourth-quarter chances too, but they have something Philly does not:? One of the best defenses in the league.

Rosenthal?s pick: Cowboys 27, Eagles 21.

Chargers at Chiefs

Florio?s take:? Suddenly, the Chiefs have become the hottest team in the AFC West.? Just as suddenly, the Chargers seem to be falling apart.? After losing 31-0 in San Diego last year, the Chiefs played the Chargers close on the road in Week Three.? Now that the rivalry returns to Arrowhead Stadium, it?s time for the Chiefs to tighten up the top of the division.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 27, Chargers 21.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Chiefs have quietly survived Jamaal Charles? injury, ranking seventh in rushing yards.? The Chargers have quietly stunk defending the run, giving up exactly 162 yards to the Broncos and Jets the last two games. Put them together in Arrowhead, and there might be a three-way tie for the AFC West lead.

Rosenthal?s pick: Chiefs 26, Chargers 21.

Banks agree to take big loss on Greek debt

European leaders agreed Thursday morning on a crucial plan to reduce Greece's debts and provide it with more rescue loans so that the faltering country can eventually dig out from under its debt burden.

After a marathon summit, EU President Herman Van Rompuy said that the deal will reduce Greece's debt to 120 percent of its GDP in 2020. Under current conditions, it would have grown to 180 percent.

That will require banks to take on 50 percent losses on their Greek bond holdings ? a hard-fought deal that negotiators will now have to sell to individual bondholders.

Van Rompuy also said the eurozone and International Monetary Fund ? which have both been propping the country up with loans since May of 2010 ? will give the country another ?100 billion ($140 billion). That's slightly less than amount agreed in July, presumably because the banks will now pick up more of the slack.

"These are exceptional measures for exceptional times. Europe must never find itself in this situation again," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said after the meetings.

The question of how to reduce Greece's debt load had proven the sticking point in European leaders' efforts to come up with a grand plan to solve its debt crisis.

But it was just one of three prongs necessary to restore confidence in Europe's ability to pay its debts and prevent the 2-year-old crisis from pushing the continent and much of the developed world back into recession.

The first details of such a plan emerged hours earlier, when European Union leaders announced they would force the continent's biggest banks to raise ?106 billion ($148 billion) by June ? partially to ensure they could weather the expected losses on Greek debt.

Van Rompuy also announced that the eurozone would boost the firepower of their bailout fund to about ?1 trillion ($1.4 trillion) in order to protect larger economies like Italy and Spain from the market turmoil that has already pushed three countries to need bailouts.

"We have reached an agreement which I believe lets us give a credible and ambitious and overall response to the Greek crisis," French President Nicolas Sarkozy told reporters as the meeting broke Thursday morning. "Because of the complexity of the issues at stake, it took us a full night. But the results will be a source of huge relief worldwide."

Wis. children's book author Heide dies at 92 (AP)

KENOSHA, Wis. ? Prolific children's book author Florence Parry Heide, whose work was illustrated by such notable artists as Edward Gorey, Jules Feiffer and Lane Smith, has died at her Kenosha home at age 92, her family said.

Heide died in her sleep Sunday night, one of her daughters, Judith Gilliland, told The Associated Press Tuesday. The Kenosha News reports family members and friends said Heide was in good health, and her death was unexpected.

"It was just her time, I guess," daughter Roxanne Pierce told the Kenosha News. "It came as a huge shock to me this morning. We had such a wonderful evening last night together. We watched a movie, made popcorn, laughed our heads off. It was very, very good, cozy and comfy. It made me feel good."

Gilliland said her mother, a longtime Kenosha resident, was the author of more than 100 children's books. Heide's works include mostly children's books, works co-authored with others, lyrics and poems She also wrote under the pseudonyms Alex B. Allen and Jamie McDonald.

Her most critically acclaimed work was "The Shrinking of Treehorn" in 1971, which was illustrated by Edward Gorey. The New York Times named it one of the best illustrated children's books of 1971.

Carthage College professor Marilyn Ward recalls times that she brought her entire class to the author's house.

"She was everybody's favorite, and she was such a fun person, always enthusiastic," Ward told the Kenosha News. "She had a real zest for everything she did."

In addition to Heide's daughters, survivors include sons David Heide and Parry Heide. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and a son, Christen.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Carthage College in Kenosha.

Fed's Dudley: Europe among economy's big headwinds (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley said on Monday the U.S. economy still faces serious headwinds, including "spillover" effects from Europe, adding the central bank will continue to do everything within its power to help.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis has weakened the outlook for global growth and with it, U.S. exports, Dudley said in a speech to Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business.

He also listed problems in the housing market as a main stumbling block for the U.S. economy, calling it "a serious impediment" to a stronger recovery, which this year has been plagued by "quite disappointing" GDP growth.

"Without robust growth, the economy is more vulnerable to negative shocks, which unfortunately seem to keep coming," the influential U.S. central banker said in the Bronx. "It is like riding a bicycle -- at a slow speed, the bicycle wobbles and the risk of falling rises."

Faced with the worst recession in decades, the Fed in late 2008 cut rates to near zero and has since bought $2.3 trillion in bonds to spur a recovery. Yet the rebound has been weak and is now threatened by Europe's debt crisis, casting doubt on the central bank's strategy and effectiveness but also raising some expectations for more asset purchases.

"The Fed is doing -- and will continue to do -- everything within its power to promote jobs and price stability," Dudley said.

Slow U.S. economic growth has not been able to ease unemployment, which has been at 9 percent or higher the last six months. Inflation has also been higher than the Fed's preferred level of 2 percent after a period this year of lofty gas and commodities prices.

The inflation rate should fall late this year and next, barring more energy price jumps, Dudley said.

"I believe that underlying fundamentals will help to subdue inflation over the next few quarters," he said.

Last month, the Fed reached deep into its tool box and announced Operation Twist. The plan replaces $400 billion of short-term securities in its portfolio with longer-term ones to lower longer-term rates, and stimulate the economy.

Dudley said the move should provide some additional support for growth.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis, meanwhile, threatens to drag the world into another recession as policymakers there wrangled this past weekend over a possible Greek default and its impact on the European banking system.

>> nbc 's jeff rossen in los angeles , thank you. star jones , former commentator and prosecutor r, good morning to you.

>> good morning.

>> they're saying michael jackson took it upon himself to walk into the private bedroom, take eight lorazepam, unbeknownst to his doctor, conrad murray . don't they have to offer some evidence of this? they can't just make allegations and put no proof forward?

>> can i remind you what's sitting here with me and hearing that in the casey anthony case that there was some sort of child molestation? they made allegations without any proof whatsoever. she's at home right now, okay, and that's the kind of thing that a jury will look to. if they don't want to "ruin" this man's life, conrad murray could get the benefit of beyond reasonable doubt .

>> statement, prosecutors very effectively have used conrad murray 's own words.

>> absolutely.

>> the statement he gave to police and prosecutors are making the argument even if you just take conrad murray at his word we've established gross negligence .

>> yes. they're saying, the prosecution is saying we don't believe anything that he says, and because of that, he's guilty. then they're also saying if you believe everything that he says, because of that, he's guilty.

>> this is a pretty steep hole that the defense now has to climb out of. they are going to put on their own expert, forensic expert to counter the experts we've heard now from the prosecution, most of whom seemed very effective in court. is it possible the jurors just kind of throw their hands up and dueling experts and they cancel each other out?

>> the battle of the experts sort of ends with the jury tossing out the main central issue which is the propofol. that's why dr. steinberg is going to become so, so important. he laid out the six elements that could make gross negligence in and of themselves and of those six, five of them would find conrad murray guilty. that's what the prosecution is depending on. the defense very clearly just needs to do reasonable doubt when it comes to cause of death . that's where they're going.

>> and to that end the defense was actually severely limited by the judge before trial in terms of what it could put on for evidence of his former addiction, and his financial pressures. at the same time, evidence has come in that michael jackson had some kind of addiction problem. do you think jurors may find, you know, we'll never know what really happened here and that that would be sufficient to have reasonable doubt ? maybe michael jackson did take these drugs himself?

>> the jury throws its hands up and says i just don't know, that's enough to find a defendant not guilty. the bigger problem for the defense is, their alternate theories that can get to guilt. if the juries are arguing over one aspect, the prosecution has another card to play, and they've played them all. it's very skillful. there's a hole they have to get out of.

>> you stand by your position no, way conrad murray takes the stand this week.

>> absolutely not and you agree with me.

>> just checking, keeping in touch on that one. star jones ,

Albert Pujols swings for the fences ? and for the ages

St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols tied the records of Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth in hitting three home runs in a single World Series game. He matched or broke other records too.

Albert Pujols hit three home runs last night, a magnificent performance for a single game in baseball.

But to do that in the World Series? Well, you?d have to have been there in 1977 (three years before Pujols was born) to watch the New York Yankees? Reggie Jackson ? ?Mr. October? ? accomplish the same thing. Then way, way, way back to 1928 to see Babe Ruth himself tie his own 1926 record for three homers in a World Series game.

It left sports scribes ? never known for their lack of over-the-topness ? sputtering as they searched for comparisons to other events in the history of humankind.

?Lincoln at Gettysburg. Hendrix at Woodstock. Pujols at Arlington,? wrote Sports Illustrated baseball columnist Tom Verducci. ?It was, quite simply, the greatest night by one player in the history of the 620 World Series games ever played.?

What Pujols did Saturday night is ?destined to be etched in bronze on a plaque in Cooperstown,? predicted Tyler Kepner of the New York Times.

And it wasn?t just Pujols? three mighty blasts over the fences at Rangers Ballpark that defined for history the St. Louis Cardinals' 16-7 win over the Texas Rangers in Arlington.

In that one game, noted Verducci: ?He also tied World Series records for runs batted in (six, by Bobby Richardson and Hideki Matsui) and hits (five by Paul Molitor, with Pujols, incredibly, getting five hits off five different pitchers in a six-inning span). The hits ? two singles and three homers ? added up to 14 total bases, two more than the previous record shared by Ruth and Jackson.?

To say that ?no one ever had a night this big? seemed almost superfluous.

Until he began turning his bat into a bazooka, the night (and the series to that point) had been less than remarkable for Pujols. He had gone hitless in the first two games at home in St. Louis, and he?d made a defensive error at first base then refused to talk with reporters about any of that. His first time up Saturday night, he grounded out.

But by the end of the evening ? having left the Texas pitching staff battered and the hometown fans at Rangers Ballpark stunned ? all that was forgotten. (Although not, you can be certain, by pitchers Alexi Ogando, Michael Gonzalez, and Darren Oliver, who had to watch the ball they?d just been holding soar into the stratosphere.)

When (and if) the Series gets to game 6 and returns to Busch Stadium in St. Louis, you can bet the fan response to Pujols? first time at bat will set the nearby 630-foot Gateway Arch swaying.

"Hopefully, at the end of my career, I can look back and say, 'Wow, what a game it was in Game 3 in 2011," Pujols said when it was all over Saturday night.

Wow, indeed.

School scrambles to retrieve X-rated prizes

School administrators hoping to reward students for their A+ fund-raising efforts at a Florida elementary school unwittingly gave them X-rated gifts, officials said.

School officials at Jay Elementary School in the Panhandle on Wednesday were trying to collect more than 100 bracelets distributed to students involved in a fund-raising drive after pictures of naked women were found hidden beneath the bracelets' cloth coverings.

Known as slap bracelets, the accessories were handed out to about 160 students. One curious child removed the cloth cover to expose the springy, recycled metal measure tape used to give the bracelet its grip.

Along with inches and centimeter marks, the tape included pictures of partially clothed and nude women, Santa Rosa County School District spokesman Bill Emerson said.

"It was one of those calls you get from parents where you say, "Really?" Emerson said. "Then it turns out to be true."

The school district alerted the Nashville-based company that had purchased the bracelets from a Chinese manufacturer, and the company has stopped shipments of the naughty novelties, Emerson said.

Parents have been understanding, he said. The district is continuing efforts to retrieve the indecent prizes but has so far gotten only a handful back.

He said he wouldn't be surprised if some students keep the bracelets. "Curiosity is bound to get the better of some of them," Emerson said.

Amazon sued in Seattle over revealing actress' age (AP)

SEATTLE ? An actress is suing Amazon.com in Seattle for more than $1 million for revealing her age on its Internet Movie Database website and refusing to remove the reference when asked.

KIRO-FM reports ( http://bit.ly/oqHG0J) the actress says Amazon's conduct amounts to fraud and breach of contract. She used Jane Doe in court documents filed last week and believes her personal information was taken after she used her credit card to purchase a professional subscription to IMDb.

The actress is from Texas but her hometown was not included in court documents.

The woman believes she has lost income because the information was posted. Her attorney says 40-year-old actresses are not in demand in the movie business.

Neither Seattle-based Amazon nor IMDb have commented on the claim.
