PFT: Payton says Saints starters to go 'full steam ahead'

New York Giants v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

On the surface, it?s easy to shrug at Sunday?s slate of games, given the sense that only a few postseason loose ends remain.? But as our good friend Ricky Diamond, producer extraordinaire at NBC Sports, points out, all but three of the games have meaning.

Unfortunately for FOX, all three of the meaningless games ? Redskins-Eagles, Bears-Vikings, Seahawks-Cardinals ? will be televised on its network.

Here are the implications of each of the other games.

Bills at Patriots:? New England clinches the top seed in the AFC with a win.? A loss combined with a win by the Steelers or Ravens would push the Pats to No. 2.

Jets at Dolphins:? New York remains alive for the second wild-card berth in the AFC.

Titans at Texans:? Ditto for the Titans.

Colts at Jaguars:? The Colts secure the No. 1 pick if they lose; if they win (and if the Rams lose to the 49ers), the pick goes to St. Louis.

Ravens at Bengals:? The Ravens need a win to clinch the AFC North and the No. 2 seed.? The Bengals must win to secure the second wild-card berth in the AFC.

Steelers at Browns:? A Steelers win plus a Ravens loss gives Pittsburgh the AFC North title and the No. 2 seed.? Throw in a Patriots loss, and the Steelers emerge with the No. 1 seed.

Chiefs at Broncos:? Denver clinches the AFC West with a victory.

Chargers at Raiders:? Oakland takes the AFC West with a victory and a loss by the Broncos.? The Raiders with a win also have a shot at the second AFC wild-card berth.

Panthers at Saints:? The Saints can capture the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a win and a 49ers loss.

Buccaneers at Falcons:? With a Falcons win and a Lions loss, Atlanta secures the No. 5 seed in the NFC, avoiding a potential return trip to New Orleans.

Lions at Packers:? With a win, the Lions clinch the fifth seed, avoiding the Saints in the wild-card round.

49ers at Rams:? A win by San Fran nails down the No. 2 seed; a loss by the Rams could deliver the top pick in the draft, if the Colts beat the Jaguars.

Cowboys at Giants:? A true playoff play-in game, the winner takes the NFC East.? The loser goes home.

And so be sure to ring in the New Year by keeping your eyes on every NFL game on Sunday.? (Except the three that don?t matter.) We?ll be watching them all ? including the three that don?t matter ? and bringing you all the pertinent information right here.

Syrian troops kill protesters as monitors visit

Arab League monitors gathered accounts about the Syrian government's crackdown on dissent in the central city of Homs Wednesday as fresh violence flared just dozens of miles away. Activists said troops opened fire on thousands of unarmed protesters, killing at least six.

Though President Bashar Assad's regime has made concessions to the observers, including the release of nearly 800 prisoners, the military was pressing ahead with a campaign to put down mostly peaceful protests.

In the two days since the Arab monitors arrived, activists said troops have killed at least 39 people, including the six shot in the central city of Hama on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the monitors are expected to visit Hama, Idlib and Daraa ? all centers of the uprising.

The continued bloodshed ? and comments by an Arab League official praising Syria's cooperation ? have fueled concerns by the Syrian opposition that the Arab mission is a farce and a distraction from the ongoing killings.

Arab League: 'Nothing frightening' in Syria hotspot

The opposition suspects Assad is only trying to buy time and forestall more international sanctions and condemnation.

"This mission has absolutely no mandate, no authority, no teeth," said Ausama Monajed, a member of the Syrian National Council, the main opposition group. "The regime does not feel obliged to even bring down the number of casualties a day."

The 60 monitors ? the first Syria has allowed in during the nine-month uprising ? are supposed to be ensuring the regime is complying with terms of a plan to end a crackdown the U.N. says has killed more than 5,000 people since March.

The plan, which Syria agreed to on Dec. 19, demands that the regime remove its security forces and heavy weapons from cities, start talks with the opposition and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country. It also calls for the release of all political prisoners.

On Wednesday, the government released 755 prisoners following a report by Human Rights Watch accusing authorities of hiding hundreds of detainees from the monitors. It was the second concession in two days.

The army on Monday pulled some of its troops back from the central city of Homs after bombarding it for days and killing scores of people. Monitors who were allowed into the city were met by tens of thousands of protesters who called for Assad's execution.

Images obtained by The Associated Press from the city in the days leading up to the monitors' visit show army defectors inside a bombed-out building, firing machine guns through gaping holes in a wall.

In another, a huge crowd fills the street for a nighttime rally behind a giant banner of the uprising's revolutionary flag. A row of women wear the flags and a large sign overhead reads: "All the doors are closed except your door, God."

There are also photos of wounded civilians lying on a floor in pools of blood, and being treated with crude medical equipment. Another shows an alleyway with blood smeared on a wall and pooled on the ground.

At a Dec. 21 protest, a banner reads: "To the Arab League: Your initiative cannot protect us from death." Young girls with headbands that read "Leave!" and sashes calling for the "execution of Bashar" protest under banners with "Freedom and Dignity."

The images show the intensity of the opposition against Assad's regime, which brought on the offensive against Homs that began on Friday and lasted until monitors arrived Tuesday to start their one-month mission with a visit to the city.

Several from the team of 12 stayed in Homs overnight and they continued to work there Wednesday. There was no word on whether other teams went to different cities.

According to officials and activists, the monitors went to several districts of Homs, including trouble spots in Baba Amr, Bab Sbaa and Inshaat.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Paul's surge prompting a new look from GOP voters (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? Ron Paul wants to legalize pot and shut down the Federal Reserve. He thinks the federal government has no authority to outlaw abortion, no business bombing Iran to keep it from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and no justification to print money unless it's backed up by gold bars.

And he might win the Iowa caucuses.

The closer the first votes of the 2012 presidential campaign get, the more competitive the Texas congressman has become. It's a moment his famously fervent supporters have longed for. Plenty of others are asking: What's Ron Paul about, again?

As in his two prior quixotic campaigns for president, Paul has toiled for months as a fringe candidate best known for staking out libertarian positions. As every other Republican candidate lined up to attack President Barack Obama's health care law and to promise tax cuts, Paul again demanded audits of the Federal Reserve and a return to the gold standard.

Leading in some state polls, Paul is getting a look from mainstream voters in Iowa, where the 76-year-old obstetrician has emerged as a serious contender in the Jan. 3 caucuses ? and in other early voting states, should he pull off a victory.

The sudden rush of attention to Paul's resume hasn't been kind. He's spent the past week disowning racist and homophobic screeds in newsletters he published decades ago, including one following the 1992 riots in Los Angeles that read, "Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to collect their welfare checks three days after rioting began."

"Everybody knows I didn't write them and they're not my sentiments, so it's sort of politics as usual," Paul said during a recent Iowa campaign stop.

Looking to cut into Paul's support, rivals laid into him on Tuesday.

In an interview on CNN, Newt Gingrich said Paul holds "views totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American." And Rick Santorum chided, "The things most Iowans like about Ron Paul are the things he's least likely to accomplish and the things most Iowans are worried about about Ron Paul are the things he can accomplish."

Paul returns to Iowa on Wednesday, giving his impressive grass-roots organization in the state a last chance to present, and perhaps defend, positions he's staked out over a long political career and reiterated during the 13 Republican debates held this year.

Paul has served a dozen terms in Congress as a Republican, but he espouses views that have made him the face of libertarianism in the U.S. He blames both Republicans and Democrats for running up the federal debt and opposes any U.S. military involvement overseas. He wants to bring home all troops from all U.S. bases abroad.

He vows to do away with five Cabinet-level departments ? Commerce, Education, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, and Interior ? and repeal the amendment to the Constitution that created the federal income tax. He opposes federal flood insurance and farm subsidies and wants to remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances while allowing states to decide how to regulate it.

He says he'll cut $1 trillion out of the first budget he offers as president. He doesn't believe in a border fence but says illegal immigrants shouldn't get a free education in public schools.

He's reliably described by political pundits as non-establishment, quirky, unorthodox. During a Republican debate in Sioux City, Iowa, earlier this month, Paul defended his views and rejected the idea that they make him unelectable.

"The important thing is, the philosophy I'm talking about is the Constitution and freedom, and that brings people together," Paul said. "It brings independents in the fold and it brings Democrats over on some of these issues."

Paul doesn't always side with the most extreme conservative proposals. When it comes to Gingrich's suggestion that judges could be hauled before Congress to explain their rulings, Paul joined other Republicans in dismissing the idea.

Paul's recent surge in Iowa isn't the first time the GOP establishment has been forced to pay attention to him. A fundraising blitz that netted $5 million in one day in 2008 led Republican operatives to weigh whether he was a bigger threat to siphon votes than previously thought.

Now he may be in his best position yet to do more than just steal votes.

"I see this philosophy as being very electable, because it's an American philosophy, it's the rule of law," Paul said.

Expedia touts verified hotel reviews

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

Travelers considering using Expedia.com to book a room at the three-star Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas will find rates starting at $44 and descriptive copy promising ?newly remodeled? rooms and ?world-class circus acts.?

Sounds fun. But under the ?Guest Reviews? tab, potential guests will also find two recent reviews calling the hotel ?not the best? and ?more like average average.?

Could those write-ups be the handiwork of a couple of clowns from the competition down the road?

Not likely. At least not anymore.

In a move designed to make better use of its growing database of millions of traveler-generated hotel reviews and assure users that its reviews are not faked ??an issue other sites are dealing with ? Expedia has rolled out a new hotel booking platform with a revamped ?Expedia Verified Reviews? program.

The enhanced program allows travelers to filter hotel searches in new ways (for example, by proximity to a sports stadium) and confirms that each review ? good or bad ??was written by an Expedia customer who actually booked and stayed at that hotel.

With a new review form that rolled out last week, Expedia is also gathering more information.

?We?re starting to collect interest information,? said John Kim, Expedia?s senior vice president of global products. ?We get a lot of requests for reviews that would be useful for people with dogs or for hotels that would be good for foodies. The new form we send out after a hotel stay allows customers to write reviews for a specific audience.?

The verification process may narrow the pool of reviewers, Kim said, ?but we can get high quality, narrow content that is useful because we have so many users.?

Sites such as TripAdvisor, recently spun off from Expedia, that allow user reviews was a transformational travel achievement, said Bjorn Hanson, divisional dean of New York University?s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management. ?Now the idea of verified reviews is a major enhancement,? he said.

Hanson notes that verifying a review doesn?t prevent unfair or unreasonable reviews, but ?it does prevent the work of unscrupulous competitors and consumers unhappy with a prior experience with that brand from posting a baseless review.

?It doesn?t make TripAdvisor look bad,? said Hanson. ?It makes Expedia look like it?s advancing the state of the art, which is a competitive advantage.??

Ga. towns aims to fuel trucks with cooking oil mix

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta suburb of Smyrna plans to fuel some of its city trucks with a mix that includes biodiesel, which is repurposed cooking oil the city plans to collect from dozens of restaurants that fry food.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/sZWyAM) that Smyrna joins at least two other Georgia cities - Roswell and Tybee Island - in using Department of Energy federal stimulus funds to start and run biodiesel programs for their fleets.

Ann Kirk, executive director of Keep Smyrna Beautiful, said her city's program will begin in January. It was modeled on a program in Hoover, Ala.

Kirk said it will be phased in as supplemental fuel for the city's fleet, with the idea that eventually some of the city's trucks will run entirely on the repurposed cooking oil.

Kim Jong Il's son strengthens power with new post (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Kim Jong Il's son was identified Monday as head of a top decision-making body of the ruling Workers' Party, a post that now gives him authority over political as well as military matters in North Korea.

A week after state media reported Kim's Dec. 17 death, the campaign to install successor Kim Jong Un was gaining momentum.

On Saturday, state media referred to him as "supreme leader" of North Korea's 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him. On Monday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ? a post that appears to make him the top official in the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong Il ruled North Korea as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defense Commission.

His father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, meanwhile, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor, is the third generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. He was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

Monday's reference to his new title was in commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, urging soldiers to dedicate their lives "to protect the party's Central Committee headed by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un." The editorial called on the people to become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century."

The language echoed slogans used years ago to rally support for Kim Jong Il, and made clear the son is quickly moving toward leadership of the Workers' Party, one of the country's highest positions, in addition to the military.

North Korea refers to Kim Il Sung as the "sun" of the nation and his birthday is celebrated as the "Day of the Sun," and state media have sought to emphasize Kim Jong Un's role in carrying out the Kim family legacy throughout his succession movement.

His titles are slight variations of those held by his father, but appear to carry the same weight. It was unclear whether the nation's constitution had been changed to reflect the transfer of leadership as when Kim Jong Il took power after his father's death.

A day earlier, state TV showed footage of Kim Jong Un's uncle and key patron, Jang Song Thaek, in a military uniform with a general's insignia. It was the first time that Jang, who was promoted last year to vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party along with Kim Jong Un, was shown on state TV in military garb.

Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral is set to take place Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

People continued lining up Monday in central Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funereal flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

South Koreans were among the mourners in Pyongyang. The widow of former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North, each led delegations that drove across the heavily fortified border to Pyongyang.

They were greeted by North Korean officials during a stop at a factory park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, according to footage from AP Television News in North Korea. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.

Meanwhile, a South Korean activist was also in Pyongyang to pay respects to Kim Jong Il but without South Korean government permission, her colleagues said in a statement. For South Koreans, making unauthorized trips to North Korea is punishable by up to three years in prison, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

The Korean peninsula remains in a technical state of war because the three-year Korean war ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty.

Your Three Investing Opponents | The Big Picture

Your Three Investing Opponents
By John Mauldin
December 24, 2011

~~~
Tough Year!
Three Opponents in Investing
We Have Met the Enemy and They Is Us
We Are Tool Makers
Individual Investors Have Certain Advantages Over Institutions
We All Need a Coach
Hong Kong, South Africa, Stockholm, and More
It?s Christmas Eve and that time of year when we start thinking about what we did in the past year and what we want to do in the next. Why do we make the mistakes we make (over and over and over?) and how do we avoid them in the future? If it seems to be part of our basic human condition, that?s because it is. Recently I have been having a running conversation with Barry Ritholtz on the psychology of investing (something we both enjoy discussing and writing about). Since I am busily researching my annual forecast issue (and taking the day off), I asked Barry to share a few of his thoughts on why we do the things we do. He gives us even more, exploring the three main opponents we face when we enter the arena of investing.
Barry is the driving force behind The Big Picture blog, often cited as the #1 blog site in terms of traffic (and a favorite of mine!) and FusionIQ, a software service that uses both fundamental and technical analysis. Over the years Barry and I have known each other, we have become quite good friends. If you ever get a chance to catch us on a panel together, you are in for some fun, as we tend to go at it and each other just for the heck of it, while trying to share the little that we have learned along the way. Barry is all over financial TV and now has a weekly column in the Washington Post. And now, let me turn it over to Barry.
By Barry Ritholtz
?Tough Year!?
We hear that around the office nearly every day ? from professional traders to money managers to even the ?most-hedged? of the hedge fund community. This year?s markets have perplexed the best of them. Each week brings another event that sets up some confusing crosscurrent: call them reversals or head fakes or bear traps or (my personal favorite) the ?fake-out break-out? ? this volatile, trendless market has been unkind to Wall Street pros and Main Street investors alike.
Indeed, buy & hold investors have had more ups and downs this year than your average rollercoaster. The third and fourth quarters alone had more than a dozen market swings, ranging from 5 percent to more than 20 percent. Despite all of that action, the S&P 500 is essentially unchanged year-to-date. It doesn?t take much to push portfolios into the red these days.
Three Opponents in Investing
With markets more challenging than ever, individual investors need to understand exactly whom they are going up against when they step onto the field of battle. You have three opponents to consider whenever you invest.
The first is Mr. Market himself. He is, as Benjamin Graham described him, your eternal partner in investing. He is a patient if somewhat bipolar fellow. Subject to wild mood swings, he is always willing to offer you a bid or an ask. If you are a buyer, he is a seller ? and vice versa. But do not mistake this for generosity: he is your opponent. He likes to make you look a fool. Sell him shares at a nice profit, and he happily takes their prices so much higher you are embarrassed to even mention them again. Buy something from him on the cheap, and he will show you exactly what cheap is. And perhaps most frustrating of all, Mr. Market has no ego ? he does not care about being right or wrong; he only exists to separate the rubes from their money.
Yes, Mr. Market is a difficult opponent. But your next rivals are nearly as tough: they are everyone else buying or selling stocks.
Recall what Charles Ellis said when he was overseeing the $15-billion endowment fund at Yale University:
?Watch a pro football game, and it?s obvious the guys on the field are far faster, stronger and more willing to bear and inflict pain than you are. Surely you would say, ?I don?t want to play against those guys!?
?Well, 90% of stock market volume is done by institutions, and half of that is done by the world?s 50 largest investment firms, deeply committed, vastly well prepared ? the smartest sons of bitches in the world working their tails off all day long. You know what? I don?t want to play against those guys either.?
Ellis lays out the brutal truth: investing is a rough and tumble business. It doesn?t matter where these traders work ? they may be on prop desks, mutual funds, hedge funds, or HFT shops ? they employ an array of professional staff and technological tools to give themselves a significant edge. With billions at risk, they deploy anything that gives them even a slight advantage.
These are who individuals are doing battle with. Armed only with a PC, an internet connection, and CNBC muted in the background, investors face daunting odds. They are at a tactical disadvantage, outmanned and outgunned.
We Have Met the Enemy and They Is Us
That is even before we meet your third opponent, perhaps the most difficult one to conquer of all: You.
You are your own third opponent. And, you may be the opponent you understand the least of all three. It is more than time constraints, lack of discipline, and asymmetrical information that challenges you. The biggest disadvantage you have is that melon perched atop your 3rd opponent?s neck. It is your big ole brain, and unless you do something about it, it is going to lose all of your money for you.
See it? There. Sitting right behind your eyes and between your ears. That ?thing? you hardly pay any attention to. You just assume it knows what it?s doing, works properly, doesn?t make too many mistakes. I hate to disabuse you of those lovely notions; but no, sorry, it does not work nearly as well as you assume. At least, not when it comes to investing. The wiring is an historical remnant, hardly functional for modern living. It is overrun with desires, emotions, and blind spots. Its capacity for cognitive error is nearly endless. It was originally developed for entirely other purposes than risk assessment in capital markets. Indeed, when it comes to money, the way most investors use those 100 billion neurons or so of grey matter, they might as well not even bother using their brains at all.
Let me give you an example. Think of any year from 1990-2005. Off of the top of your head, take a guess how well your portfolio did that year. Write it down ? this is important (that big dumb brain of yours cannot be trusted to be honest with itself). Now, pull your statement from that year and calculate your gains or losses.
How?d you do? Was the reality as good as you remembered? This is a phenomenon called selective retention. When it comes to details like this, you actually remember what you want to, not what factually occurred. Try it again. Only this time, do it for this year ? 2011. Write it down. Go pull up your YTD performance online. We?ll wait.
Well, how did you do? Not nearly as well as you imagined, right? Welcome to the human race.
This sort of error is much more commonplace than you might imagine. If we ask any group of automobile owners how good their driving skills are, about 80% will say ?Above average.? The same applies to how well we evaluate our own investing skills. Most of us think we are above average, and nearly all of us believe we are better than we actually are.
(Me personally, I am not an above-average driver. This is despite having taken numerous high-performance driving courses and spending a lot of time on various race tracks. I know this is true because my wife reminds me of it constantly.) [JM here ? I am also in the bottom 25%, as my kids constantly remind me!])
As it turns out, there is a simple reason for this. The worse we are at any specific skill set, the harder it is for us to evaluate our own competency at it. This is called the Dunning?Kruger effect. This precise sort of cognitive deficit means that areas we are least skilled at ? let?s use investing decisions as an example ? also means we lack the ability to identify any investing shortcomings. As it turns out, the same skill set needed to be an outstanding investor is also necessary to have ?metacognition? ? the ability to objectively evaluate one?s own abilities. (This is also true in all other professions.)
Unlike Garrison Keillor?s Lake Wobegon, where all of the children are above average, the bell curve in investing is quite damning. By definition, all investors cannot be above average. Indeed, the odds are high that, like most investors, you will underperform the broad market this year. But it is more than just this year ? ?underperformance? is not merely a 2011 phenomenon. The statistics suggest that 4 out of 5 of you underperformed last year, and the same number will underperform next year, too.
Underperformance is not a disease suffered only by retail investors ? the pros succumb as well. In fact, about 4 out of 5 mutual fund managers underperform their benchmarks every year. These managers engage in many of the same errors that Main Street investors make. They overtrade, they engage in ?groupthink,? they freeze up, some have been even known to sell in a panic. (Do any of these sound familiar to you?)
These kinds of errors seem to be hardwired in us. Humans have evolved to survive in competitive conditions. We developed instincts and survival skills, and passed those on to our descendants. The genetic makeup of our species contains all sorts of elements that were honed over millions of years to give us an edge in surviving long enough to procreate and pass our genes along to our progeny. Our automatic reactions in times of panic are a result of that development arc.
This leads to a variety of problems when it comes to investing in equities: our instincts often betray us. To do well in the capital markets requires developing skills that very often are the opposite of what our survival instincts are telling us. Our emotions compound the problem, often compelling us to make changes at the worst possible times. The panic selling at market lows and greedy chasing as we head into tops are a reflection of these factors.
The sort of grinding market we had in 2011 only exacerbates investor aggravation, and therefore increases poor decision making. Facts and logic go out the window, and thinking gets replaced with naked emotions. We get annoyed, angry, frightened, frustrated ? and that does not help returns. Indeed, our evolutionary ?flight or fight? response developed for a reason ? it helped keep us alive out on the savannah. But the adrenaline necessary to fight a Cro-Magnon or flee from a sabre-toothed tiger does not help us in the capital markets. Indeed, study after study suggests our own wetware works against us; the emotions that helped keep us alive on the plains now hinder our investment performance.
The problem, as it turns out, lies primarily in those large mammalian brains of ours. Our wiring evolved for a specific set of survival challenges, most of which no longer exist. We have cognitive deficits that are by-products of that. Much of our decision making comes with cognitive errors ?secretly? built in. We are often unaware we even have these (for lack of a better word) defects. These cognitive foibles are one of the main reasons that, when it comes to investing, we humans just ain?t built for it.
We Are Tool Makers
But we are not helpless. These large mammalian brains of ours can do a whole lot more than merely overreact to stimulus. We think up new ideas, ponder new tools, and create new technologies. Indeed, our ability to innovate is one of the factors that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom.
As investors, we can use our big brains to compensate for our known limitations. This means creating tools to help us make better decisions. When battling Mr. Market ? as tough as any Cro-Magnon or sabre-toothed tiger ? it helps to be able to make informed decisions coolly and objectively. If we can manage our emotions and prevent them from causing us to make decisions out of panic or greed, then our investing results will improve dramatically.
So stop being your own third opponent. Jiu jitsu yourself, and learn how to outwit your evolutionary legacy. Use that big ole melon for a change. You just might see some improvement in your portfolio performance.
Individual Investors Have Certain Advantages Over Institutions
One final thought. Smaller investors do not realize that they possess quite a few strategic advantages ? if only they would take advantage of them. Consider these small-investor pluses:
? No benchmark to meet quarterly (or monthly), so you can have longer-term time horizons and different goals
? You can enter or exit a position without impacting markets.
? There is no public scrutiny of your holdings and no disclosures required, so you don?t have to worry about someone taking your ideas.
? You don?t have to limit yourself to just the largest stocks or worry about position size (this is huge).
? Cost structure, fees, and taxes are within your control.
? You can reverse errors without professional consequences ? you don?t get fired for admitting a mistake.
? You can have longer-term time horizons and different goals.
And with those thoughts, good luck and good trading in 2012!
We All Need a Coach
John here. As long-time readers know, I typically suggest that readers find a professional to help them with their investments, as doing it on your own takes time and a certain emotional mindset. Most of us (myself included) don?t have it. But some of you do have the mindset or desire and just need some help. One way to get help is to find a tool, as Barry talked about, that helps you have some objectivity about your stock-picking decisions.
Quick commercial: Barry has developed such a tool for professionals: IQ Trader. I asked him to do a less complicated, less expensive version for my readers. It ranks 8,000 stocks and ETFs and gives specific buy-sell signals based on your criteria. What I like about it is that it uses both fundamental and technical analysis to develop those signals. Fusion IQ puts powerful quantitative tools into the hands of the average active trader. This can be of enormous assistance for the individual investor who wants an objective measure of stocks and sectors.
There?s no math, only easy to use tools. All of the heavy algorithmic calculations are hidden from view. Subscribers get a straightforward system to monitor their portfolios, and easily track potential names in their watch list. Fusion IQ?s email alerts let you know when a stock you are considering reaches predetermined parameters.
Long-term investors who suffered through the downturn in 2007-08 will appreciate the risk-management tools Barry has developed. You can easily keep tabs on your portfolio holdings, as they are monitored for both fundamental and technical changes in character. The Fusion IQ software also monitors and ranks the different sectors of your holdings.
If you would like to learn more or get a subscription, my readers are the first to see the new Fusion IQ Investor site. Hong Kong, South Africa, Stockholm, and More
It is Christmas Eve tonight, and the kids and friends will be gathering. It is always a good time to sit and enjoy my family. I will go and see my 94-year-old mother this afternoon, as she won?t be able to come for Christmas dinner as usual. Seems she was at church and thought there was a chair underneath her and sat down, only to find there was nothing but hard floor, and she broke her tailbone. She is in a great deal of pain if she moves, so it is best for her to stay in bed while she heals.
My daughter Abbi has let me know she wants to go to the Mavericks game on Christmas Day; and since it is an early afternoon game, dinner will be in the late afternoon. I will set the prime to roasting at a very low temperature so it will not overcook, and then go and watch them raise the NBA Championship pennant for the first time in Dallas. I have been a season ticket holder for about 30 years (since they first came here) and it has been a long, long time to wait for a championship.
Next year is already shaping up to be another year for traveling. I will be speaking in Hong Kong and Singapore in January; Capetown, South Africa in February; and Stockholm, Sweden in March. And all sorts of places in the US, as the schedule starts to take shape.
Have a very blessed Christmas and holiday time. I have a very special letter planned for next week to start you off right for 2012, and then my own forecast will be out on January 5. So much to read and think about. Have a great week!
Your wondering where the year went analyst,
Mass rally in Moscow raises pressure on Putin (Reuters)
MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Tens of thousands of flag-waving and chanting protesters called on Saturday for a disputed parliamentary election to be rerun, increasing pressure on Vladimir Putin as he seeks a new term as Russian president.
The protesters chanted "Russia without Putin" and "New elections, New elections" as speakers called for an end to Putin's 12-year domination of the country at the second big opposition rally in two weeks in central Moscow.
"Do you want Putin to return to the presidency?" novelist Boris Akunin asked from a large stage.
Whistling and jeering, protesters chanted: No!"
Police said at least 28,000 attended the rally on Prospekt Sakharova (Sakharov Avenue), named after Soviet-era dissident Andrei Sakharov. One opposition leader put the crowd size at up to 100,000 people.
The big turnout is likely to encourage organizers to believe they can keep up the momentum of the biggest opposition demonstrations since Putin rose to power 12 years ago, although the prime minister seems intent on riding out the protests.
Tens of thousands of people protested in Moscow on December 10 and many more demonstrated across the world's largest country the same day to complain against alleged vote-rigging in the December 4 election won by Putin's United Russia party.
The protesters were heartened by the Kremlin's human rights council saying a new election should be held, although it is only an advisory body whose recommendations are regularly ignored by Russia's leaders.
Many of the protesters wore white ribbons, the symbol of the protests, and others carried balloons and flags at the rally, which brought together liberals, nationalists, anarchists, environmentalists and urban youth on a bitterly cold day.
"The last protest made a huge impression and I want others to come and realize they can stand up for their right. We all know the election result and we all know how dishonest they were," said Andrei Chernyshov, a 22-year-old student.
PROTESTERS DISMISS CONCESSIONS
President Dmitry Medvedev, who is stepping aside next year to let Putin take his place after four years as prime minister, has promised electoral reforms to relax the Kremlin's grip on power, including restoring the election of regional governors.
But the opposition has rejected these conciliatory efforts and says Putin and Medvedev have ignored its key demand for a rerun of the parliamentary poll, which handed a slim majority to the ruling United Russia party.
The protesters say United Russia benefited from widespread voting irregularities and international monitors said the vote was slanted in the ruling party's favor.
"The party of swindlers and thieves are the only ones who benefit from the preservation of the status quo," journalist Leonid Parfyonov said on a video message shown on a screen.
Protesters held signs saying: "For Russia without Putin."
Dozens of police trucks lined the capital's main ring road nearby and the police blocked off roads around the protest site, but they did not intervene.
Putin is still expected to win the presidential election in March and return to the post he held from 2000 until 2008 but there are growing doubts that he will win outright in the first round of voting. The opposition is largely divided and has no candidate to unite it in the March presidential poll.
The former KGB spy's popularity has declined since he and Medvedev announced plans in September to swap jobs next year, a decision which many Russians said showed a disregard for democracy.
Putin, 59, has suggested that many of those taking part in the protests have been paid to turn out and accused the United States of encouraging the protests. Many people, who answered calls to protests on social networking sites, say this underlined that he is out of touch.
Mayor, police chief defend action to dismantle Occupy Albany
ALBANY ? On the matted, dead grass of Academy Park ? where the lively Occupy Albany camp held court for eight weeks ? only disappointment reigned Friday.
Disappointment by protesters still furious over what they say was excessive force wielded a day earlier by a police department whose leader, Chief Steven Krokoff, they had previously viewed as their principled protector.
And disappointment by Krokoff and other top city officials, who criticized the lack of respect shown by demonstrators and lamented having being drawn into the exact sort of physical conflict with the protesters they had sought for two months to avoid.
Krokoff and Mayor Jerry Jennings stridently backed the actions of their officers in the bizarre tug of war Thursday over the encampment's last remaining tent ? a scrum that ended with three officers injured and several members of the crowd, including a city councilman, reeling from pepper spray used by one mounted officer.
"Use of that pepper spray most definitely prevented serious injuries ? not only to the police officers but to the other people that were in that camp," Krokoff said Friday morning, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Mayor Jerry Jennings. "I'm proud of each and every member of my police department ? as proud as I've ever been of them ? for the work that they've done. ...the abuse that they took."
Richard Gorleski, the officer who used the pepper spray, later confirmed Krokoff's account of the incident, saying he reacted only after protesters reached for the reins and bridle of his horse.
"If I didn't spray a few of those people, someone would have been seriously injured," said Gorleski, who is also president of the Albany Police Officers Union. He said officers below him were being rushed by protesters trying to keep police from restraining those clinging to the tent.
Some protesters, however, disputed that account.
Jennings, meanwhile, contrasted the city's decision to send crews of workers into Academy Park to dismantle the two-month-old encampment after its permit expired Thursday with tactics used elsewhere.
"I didn't go in the middle of the night like they did in other cities," he said. "They did show restraint."
Krokoff's refusal to arrest the protesters after the camp first took root Oct. 21 ? paired with District Attorney David Soares' refusal to prosecute them ? only boosted the chief's credibility among progressives who backed his candidacy for the job last year. That he was at the center of its unraveling served as a strange coda to the Occupy Albany encampment.
"I no longer trust Krokoff," declared Councilman Anton Konev, a one-time supporter of the chief.
Konev has called for hearings to investigate the use of force and said using some of the city's new beat officers to dismantle the camp may have seriously damaged newly forged relationships with the community.
Councilman Dominick Calsalaro, who said he was grazed by the mist of pepper spray, also criticized the decision to capture the tent but laid the blame with Jennings, not Krokoff, who he said was likely just following orders.
"It was totally against the whole community policing philosophy, and they've destroyed relationships that they've had with the people," Calsolaro said. "Nobody disrespected the police until they came in to take that tent."
City workers first entered the camp around 2 p.m. Thursday after officials won a court order barring the occupiers from continuing to spend nights there.
But the violence didn't flare until some three hours later, after the protesters uprooted their last tent and carried it around the city through rush-hour traffic, then returned it to the park across Washington Avenue from the state Capitol.
Protesters maintained they had no plans to leave it there. Minutes later, however, about 30 police officers under orders from Krokoff moved in to capture it to prevent them from heading back into the streets.
Mark Mishler an attorney working with the protesters, called that the day's most fateful decision, saying that if the protesters were going to resist, they would have done so hours earlier when they linked arms and surrounded the tent before taking to the streets.
"The group had already essentially made a decision that they weren't going to fight to keep it in the park," Mishler said.
The hand-to-hand struggle that ensued ? including the use of the pepper spray ? was captured on numerous video recordings. Police first said only two protesters were sprayed, but Krokoff later acknowledged more may have been hit.
Four people were arrested, and three police officers suffered minor injuries, Krokoff said, including one who was hospitalized overnight for complications resulting from a back injury.
Soares said his office will review video of the skirmish to decide whether to prosecute those arrested. In a statement, he called the conflict a "black eye" for the city. But Jennings put the blame squarely on the protesters.
"I expected cooperation. We didn't get it," Jennings said, reiterating that the occupiers are free to return to the park, so long as they leave their camping gear behind. "We're not going to allow it. We'll take 'em down again."
Colbert offering $500K to pay for SC GOP primary (AP)
COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Comedian Stephen Colbert is offering to pay half a million dollars to help subsidize South Carolina's first-in-the-South GOP presidential primary, as state officials struggle to pay for it, but there's doubt whether it would even be legal.
The Charleston native wrote in an op-ed Thursday in The State newspaper in Columbia that Colbert Super PAC ? a type of political action committee that allows him to raise unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions and individuals ? will bridge the gap after state Republicans refused to contribute anything above $180,000 collected in candidates' filing fees.
The state Election Commission, which administers South Carolina's voting, has said it has $1 million on hand for the primary but is short of the total $1.5 million price tag. Spokesman Chris Whitmire says the Commission has notified budget officials the state may need to seek permission to run a deficit to fund the primary.
Colbert wrote that he offered make up that $500,000 funding gap after state Republicans ultimately turned down his proposal to pay them $400,000 if they'd name the contest after him. Party officials have confirmed meeting with Colbert earlier this year to discuss a deal that would have renamed the balloting "The Colbert Super PAC South Carolina Republican Primary" in exchange for a check from the comedian.
Colbert, who plays a mock conservative pundit on his TV show "The Colbert Report," says he also wanted to put a question about "corporate personhood" on the January ballot. He seized on the issue after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling eased restrictions on campaign spending by corporations.
Ultimately rebuffed by the GOP, Colbert says he started working with Democrats to get the issue on the ballot, but state Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian said Thursday that effort also fell through.
State GOP executive director Matt Moore said party officials were skeptical of Colbert from the beginning but entertained his early communications before turning him down.
"Despite our repeatedly saying `no,' Stephen Colbert, the comedian, seems intent on being involved," Moore said. "It's exactly why we were wary in the first place."
Regardless of the party's position, it would be up to the state whether to accept or reject any offer.
Whitmire said the question of whether a PAC can fund a South Carolina primary is a new one. If the Election Commission were presented with the money and decided to accept it, he said, they would have to ask state Attorney General Alan Wilson to decide if state law permits a political action committee to fund a primary.
Colbert, who did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment, wrote that he will be spending the holidays in his native state and is open to discussions.
"The counties need the money, and Colbert Super PAC wants to give it to you; call it a Christmas Miracle," he wrote. "I'm going to be home in South Carolina over the holidays, so just give me a call. Both state parties have my contact info."
Matt Damon Put Trust In Cameron Crowe For 'We Bought A Zoo'
Actor tells MTV News he 'wouldn't have done' the film unless Crowe signed on.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Cameron Crowe is one of those Hollywood directors whose body of work and reputation as a filmmaker have long had actors and studios alike lining up to work with him. Crowe's impressive filmography includes cinema staples like "Say Anything," "Almost Famous" and "Jerry Maguire," and he's aiming to add to that illustrious list with "We Bought a Zoo," starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.
When MTV News caught up with Damon recently to discuss "Zoo" (opening in wide release on Friday), we first had to touch on which Crowe classic is his favorite ... since everyone has one.
" 'Jerry Maguire' for me," Damon told us. "I love that movie and I just love Tom Cruise's performance. All the performances are great but Cruise really anchors that thing so beautifully. It's just so hard to do what he does, and he just does it really, really well in that movie."
Speaking to the premise of "Zoo" (based on a true story and book of the same name), Damon said that Crowe is the only director he trusted to tell the story without venturing into schmaltzy territory. "Without the Cameron Crowe input, I wouldn't have done it. It does feel like the kind of 'attendant pieces' are so highly combustible that you don't really want to mess with it, but it's a director's medium and, ultimately, the director is going to set the tone," Damon explained. "They're the arbiter of taste at the end of the day, so if you trust the director, you can pretty much go with any type of material. So that's why I rolled the dice on this one was really because of Cameron."
In the film Damon plays a widower struggling to keep his family together, so we wondered who the better father is: Damon's character, Benjamin, or Damon in real life?
"I think they're both pretty good actually," he said with a smile. "I do my best in real life and I think this guy is trying his best. One of the things I really related to about the movie and the character is that he's desperately trying to do his best as a dad, which leads him to do this kind of incredibly desperate thing."
Check out everything we've got on "We Bought a Zoo."
Chronic School Absenteeism Linked to Mental Health Problems (HealthDay)
THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Children who miss school often are more likely to have symptoms of mental health problems as teens, a new study finds.
Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles and colleagues compiled information on 17,000 students in grades 1 through 12.
The study found kids in second through eighth grades with mental health problems, such as antisocial behavior or depression, missed more school days than kids without those issues.
Middle and high school students who missed a lot of school were also more likely to be later diagnosed with mental health issues.
The study is in the journal Child Development.
"We've long known that students who are frequently absent from school are more likely to have symptoms of psychiatric disorders, but less clear is the reason why," said lead study author Jeffrey Wood, an associate professor of educational psychology and psychiatry at UCLA, in a Society for Research in Child Development news release. "These two aspects of youths' adjustment may at times exacerbate one another, leading over the course of time to more of each."
Because chronically missing school might influence the development of mental health issues and vice versa, researchers said programs that treat both mental health issues and school absenteeism are important.
Patio that transforms into a pool will make a splash with your guests (Yahoo! News)
Here's something that'll fit perfectly within the Bond universe: a patio that transforms into a swimming pool at the click of a button. No need to look any further for something that'll go well with that?fancy morphing table in the?mansion of your dreams.
The pool is equipped with a mechanism that controls its tile cover: Lower it to flood the space with water when you want to swim or lift it up to create room for a summer barbecue with friends. You can even control how deep you want the water to be, which is perfect if you have kids. Pool-loving, belly-flopping grown-ups don't need to worry, though, as it?has a maximum depth of 6'.
Stefan Kanetis came up with the pool's design when his arthritic mother was advised by a doctor to exercise in a body of water. Now,?Stefan's company can customize one for your home ? if you're willing to pay 20% to 30% more than what an in-ground pool will cost you, that is.
Interested? You'll have to contact the company for an accurate quote, but here's a starting point: A typical in-ground house pool?could cost anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000, which can only mean that this patio-pool hybrid requires deep pockets.
Your Business' Social Media Reflection
Social Media Reflection
Social networking began as a confusing mess for many growing companies. Since then, teams of web developers, internet service providers and engineers have simplified the experience through web apps, smart phone applications and user-friendly APIs.
Now the process of marketing your business through social media is easier than ever. This ease of use, however, has turned out to be a double-edged sword. With many one-touch solutions for creating social networking profiles, the web has become cluttered with a mess of business-related social media accounts blasting massive volumes of sporadic marketing messages.
This is a serious problem for any company with long-term social media marketing ambitions. Recent studies done by the Altimeter Group showed that companies with more than 1000 employees averaged over 39 Twitter accounts, 31 blogs and nearly 30 Facebook accounts or pages. What this equates to is patchy distribution of content and inconsistency in the image of a brand, resulting in mixed feelings from a business?s customers.
Consolidate Social Media Efforts
It is a common misconception that a company?s organizational architecture should be reflected in their social media campaign. That is, every department and every product will get its own Twitter and/or Facebook page, etc.
The sad realization is that a business?s web presence becomes separated into several, hard-to-follow, fragmented online communities. If your social media strategy is flooded with unnecessary accounts, you may eventually lose your captive audience. It is important to remember that nobody can manage several dozen pages simultaneously without exhausting unnecessary amounts of effort. As a result, many pages will become dormant, customer engagement will tank, and your online marketing strategy will suffer as a result. From a very practical viewpoint, some internet service providers may not be able support massive amounts of digital content.
Instead, your company?s online marketing campaign should implement a strict social media policy, one that outlines exactly what warrants the creation of a new social media page. You should also consider the amount and types of resources required to operate and maintain each social media account. If you?re able to minimize your social media strategy in terms of shear account volume, the costs of managing these accounts will go down, and your efforts will be more effective in the long-run.
Linking and Liking
Every social media campaign needs to identify a clear link and interaction structure. Effective link structure lets you clearly establish and assign significance of each individual social media account.
It?s important to do this as quickly and as efficiently as possible. This lets you map out a plan to gauge how you can best serve each micro-community associated with each social media account.
This also opens the door to assigning value to content as it relates to other pages. As you set this plan in motion, you can then re-purpose content across your multiple social media pages (text, video, infographics and tweets). As the social web becomes more cluttered with useless content, the practice of implementing good link structure technique will be social media?s saving grace.
Plan Before You Post
Finally, after consolidating all necessary social media accounts and putting a solid structure into place for linking and liking, it?s time to plan content. Many companies believe that just like in advertising, sheer volume equals success. The problem with publishing lots of content constantly, is that at some point, audiences will get sick of you.
Carefully planning content publishing initiatives is the best way to keep from burning out an audience and maintaining appeal. Many companies setup an editorial calendar, not unlike what magazines, newspapers and trade publications use. Simple, scheduled, and consistent messages will always reflect a business better than sheer volume. How does your social media campaign reflect your business?
